Once we were able to get one or two players who were open to the idea of talking about it, they would tell other players they know about us and it went down the line.

Some of it was online snooping, some of it was a little bit Facebook stalking, just trying to connect in any way possible. We started looking up old newspaper articles, searching stuff online, but once we were able to read some articles, we would gather some of the names of players and try to track down those players. Lyndsey: Like Britni mentioned, we split the teams in half and we each did our separate research about those specific teams. Micah: What was the research process like for this book? And I do a lot of cultural criticism so a lot of the analysis is stuff that I put in. Lynsdey comes from a fiction-writing background and a lot of the really beautiful scene work and character development came from Lyndsey. We each researched different teams and then brought our work together. In terms of how we divide the work, we split the teams in half and went from there. Lyndsey joked that I should write a book and I said only if she wrote it with me and somehow we got agented on that idea and ended up writing a book together. I was chatting with Lyndsey while writing that and very frustrated that I couldn’t find a book that told the history of the women’s game in the way I hoped to learn about it. I was working on a column about the state of the women’s game today for Bitch Media when I was the sports columnist there. Micah: How did you two come to start collaborating with one another and what was the collaborative process writing this book?īritni: Lyndsey and I met in a Facebook group for sportswriters of marginalized genders and we were friendly and Lyndsey knows more about football than I do. As we were looking into that we realized there was a whole league there and very little information publicly available about it.

I came across the Toledo Troopers as the winningest team in pro football history and Linda Jefferson and I dug into what happens when the winningest team loses its first game and discovered their loss to the Oklahoma City Dolls in 1976. Micah Wimmer: How did you first learn about the NWFL’s existence?īritni de la Cretaz: I actually came across the NWFL when Lyndsey and I were researching a version of this book that ended up not selling that was more broadly about women’s football and the history of the game. Britni de la Cretaz and Lyndsey D’Arcangelo discuss Hail Mary: The Rise and Fall of the National Women’s Football League I recently spoke to the authors about the book and we had an illuminating chat about the writing process and the final project.

It is an engaging read, full of fascinating characters, previously untold stories, and insights about the history and current state of the women’s game. Together, they told the story of the National Women’s Football League, a league that had, until their book, been largely lost to history. Hail Mary, by Britni de la Cretaz and Lyndsey D’Arcangelo, was one of my favorite sports books from 2021. Ashland won the game, 20-17.By Micah Wimmer 2 weeks ago Follow Tweetīritni de la Cretaz and Lyndsey D’Arcangelo, authors of the NWFL history Hail Mary, took time to talk with FanSided about their new book. And Cleary probably should have adjusted his coverage to suit an ESPN3 audience.īut no, he chose to be completely unimpressed by the objectively impressive touchdown. After all, Hail Mary touchdowns don’t happen on a regular basis.

Tom Cleary - the regular announcer for Grand Valley State - was serving as the ESPN3 voice for the game, and when Ashland quarterback Austin Brenner completed a 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown, Cleary chose to react with virtually no enthusiasm.Įven if your team is on the wrong end of a Hail Mary, most announcers would muster some emotion. But no, the ESPN3 call of the finish to the Division II Grand Valley State Lakers and Ashland Eagles game will not be joining the pantheon of Doug Flutie at Boston College and the Minneapolis Miracle. Those plays have produced some of the great football calls. Every part of that play should be what all football announcers dream to call: the roller coaster of emotions, the jubilation the pandemonium - all of that. There are few moments in football more exciting - at least from a broadcasting perspective - than a Hail Mary touchdown.
